Why Do Restorations Fail?
Dental restorations can fail for many reasons. More often than not, the underlying teeth can decay or fracture. Other times, it’s just a reflection of the fact that even the best materials need to be replaced eventually.
In some cases, restorations fail simply because of the march of time. They do their jobs, last as long as they were supposed to last and then just need to be replaced.
In other cases, an outside trauma or lifestyle change (such as an onset of teeth grinding or clenching) places additional, unexpected strain on a restoration and causes the restoration to fail.
And many times, the appearance of crowns and fillings are no longer acceptable. Gums may recede and roots or dark edges of old crowns can be exposed. Comprehensive planning, newer materials and artistic expertise are needed to create new, natural looking, beautiful restorations.
Whatever the specific cause, it’s important to replace a failing restoration as soon as possible. Aside from the pain and discomfort you’re experiencing, a failing piece of dental work can damage your teeth and lead to larger oral health issues.
Should you need to replace a failing restoration, our office is uniquely equipped to help. Using CEREC technology, we can closely examine and map your teeth and jaw, identifying the failing restoration and the cause of its failure. We then craft a brand-new, custom-designed restoration that addresses the underlying issue.
