Can CEREC Crowns be Used With Dental Implants?

CEREC crowns are milled on-site, enabling us to protect and perfect your smile in a single office visit. Same day dental crowns can be used to support and restore a bridge or to quickly protect a tooth impacted by trauma, infection, or severe decay. They can also be used to restore dental implants – both initially and as needed if replacing existing restorations becomes necessary.

Dental implants are inserted into the jawbone where they act as a replacement tooth root. While it is often said that dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, it is the restorations placed over implants that replace the crown, or visible portion of the tooth. The implant itself simply serves as an anchor.

Indianapolis CEREC dentist Dr. John Phelps can restore implants with one day crowns, but this will not speed the process of implant placement and restoration. It can take four to six months for an implant to fully secure into the jaw. During this time you will have a temporary restoration, which can also be milled on-site, to ensure continued strength and function. Once the healing process is complete, this will be replaced with a crown that has been completely customized for your smile.

Are CEREC Crowns Strong?

Your implant restoration, if cared for properly, may continue to provide aesthetic and functional benefits for ten or more years. This is consistent with other types of dental crowns. However, another advantage of CEREC crowns is that, when the time for replacement comes, a new one can be milled and placed over the course of a few hours. Compare this to the three to four weeks it can take to receive a replacement crown that has been milled off-site and the benefits of one-day restorations becomes even clearer.

You can help extend the life-expectancy of your restorations by:

  1. Avoiding abrasive toothpaste
  2. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  3. Not chewing ice or hard candy
  4. Visiting our office for routine cleanings

You should brush your crowns, just like your natural teeth, after every meal and snack. Flossing should be done at least once daily as well to help prevent decay from forming underneath your crown. While crowns are not vulnerable to decay, bacteria that finds it way underneath can cause serious problems. Good oral hygiene will help prevent this.
