If your teeth are discolored or misshapen, your entire life may be affected. Hiding unsightly teeth causes you to smile less, which can have a, impact on how you’re perceived in professional and social situations. This can have a real effect on your self-confidence.
Porcelain veneers can change that. They can be customized to match the color, size, and shape of your surrounding teeth to give you a smile that you want to show off. Board-certified prosthodontist Dr. John R. Phelps has nearly 30 years of experience restoring broken and discolored teeth. In this blog, he explains five reasons why veneers may be right for you.
Porcelain Veneers Can Fix Numerous Teeth Issues
Porcelain veneers can address many problems, including:
- Discolored teeth
- Worn-down teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Misaligned, uneven, or misshapen teeth
- Gaps between teeth
Porcelain Veneers Have a Natural Appearance
Veneers are customized to match the appearance of your surrounding teeth. If you have your teeth whitened before your veneer is put in place, it will be the same newer, whiter shade. The porcelain is also stain-resistant so that it will maintain that color throughout its life.
Other cosmetic dental treatments, such as crowns and bondings, don’t share this benefit. Bondings aren’t as stain-resistant as veneers are. Crowns don’t stain, but they can cause a dark line where your crown meets your gum that is aesthetically unacceptable.
Porcelain Veneers are Durable and Long-Lasting
Veneers don’t require any special care. You don’t have to do anything other than maintain good oral hygiene practices such as brushing for at least two minutes twice per day, flossing once per day, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash. Veneers are also gentle on your gums. With proper care, they can last up to 15 years before they need to be replaced.
Dental bondings are more susceptible to cracking, chipping, and breaking. They also don’t last as long as veneers. Crowns are more durable than bondings, but they can also be prone to coming loose and falling out. The metals used to make crowns can also cause allergic reactions.
Porcelain Veneers Require Little Recovery Time
While many dental procedures necessitate downtime to allow your mouth to recover and your cosmetic results to settle, veneers don’t. Once they’re cemented on and your anesthesia has worn off, you’re free to eat, drink, and chew as usual.
You may notice some rough spots from extra cement that adhered to your teeth during the application process, but it should disappear after a couple of days of healthy eating and teeth brushing.
